The Kappa Alpha Chapter Continues the Saga of Lifting The Rock Hill Community To New Heights.
ROCK
HILL, SC- The Brothers of Kappa Alpha, under the leadership of Basileus Carl Ratliff, continues to strive to be the best and
most active organization in the city. One of the major projects the Brothers focused on this summer was Community H.O.O.P.S
(Helping Others Obtain Potential Success). Brother Richie Pickering, a member of the Kappa Alpha Chapter, founded the Community
H.O.O.P.S Basketball League. This league targets teenagers who are at risk of school failure and are steady looking to the
streets as a safe haven. The sole purpose of the league is to create and maintain a positive and constructive alternative
to street activities by providing spiritual and educational activities as well as promote athletic competition. This program
is much more than basketball. What makes this program so elite is the mandatory workshop that all Community H.O.O.P.S. Basketball
League participants must attend in order to play basketball. Community volunteers and invited guest speakers conducted weekly
workshops revolving around a variety of topics. The workshops dealt with topics that range from cultural understanding, character
development, substance abuse prevention, and educational opportunities. This is the third year in the existence of the program
and one of the best. The first two years the league only had 100 participants, but this year the league had over 250 kids
to participate. The Kappa Alpha Chapter along with the Psi Kappa Chapter of Winthrop University was able to have a successful
season.
Another project the Brothers of the Kappa Alpha embarked upon was refurbishing the VFW (Veterans of Foreign
Wars) facility. Early Saturday morning the Brothers of the Kappa Alpha Chapter met at the VFW on Crawford Road in Rock Hill,
SC to paint and perform general maintenance of the 50-plus year old building. Black Veterans who served in World War II and
in the Korean Wars built the Lodge. Johnny Roseboro, Veteran World War II soldier, says that he remembers the days when Black
GIs that were traveling through the south could stop at the VFW to meet other Black servicemen and Veterans. They could watch
television, have conversation or play a friendly game of pool. But now the group is just getting too old to take care of the
place and the their numbers are dwindling almost monthly. The Chapters work consisted of painting and cleaning the outside
of the building. The front and one side of the building now have a fresh coat of white paint and looks considerably better
than before. The Veterans came by on that day to express appreciation and even offered to prepare lunch. The project is still
ongoing and the Kappa Alpha Chapter hopes to have the project complete by the end of the year.
